Two aspiring Regional Chairpersons of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Oti Region, Dr Frank Yirenkyi and Hajia Sherifa Selina Sekyere-Tijani, have pledged to increase the party’s votes and improve its electoral fortunes in the 2028 general election if elected.

The two made the pledge in separate interviews with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the party’s regional executive vetting exercise held at Kadjebi on Monday.

Dr Yirenkyi said he was contesting the position to provide dynamic leadership capable of rebuilding the party, uniting its members and attracting floating voters who did not support the NPP in the 2024 general election.

He noted that the party’s presidential votes in the Oti Region declined from 102,858, representing 35.67 per cent, in the 2020 election to 86,489, representing 31.71 per cent, in the 2024 polls.

He said the decline called for strategic leadership, effective grassroots mobilisation and sustained engagement with the electorate to restore confidence in the party.

Dr Yirenkyi, who contested the Biakoye parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NPP in the 2024 election, pledged to work closely with constituency executives, polling station executives, electoral area coordinators and party faithful to reverse the downward trend and position the party for victory in 2028.

“I am offering myself to serve because I believe the Oti Region has enormous political potential. Together, we can reorganise the party, unite our rank and file and increase our electoral fortunes,” he said.

Hajia Sekyere-Tijani also expressed confidence in her ability to lead the regional party to greater success, saying her administration would focus on inclusiveness, unity and effective grassroots organisation.

She said beyond increasing the party’s presidential votes, her vision was to secure the first parliamentary seat for the NPP in the Oti Region in the 2028 general election.

Hajia Sekyere-Tijani appealed to delegates to vote for competent and dedicated leaders who would work selflessly to strengthen the party and improve its electoral performance.

Four aspirants are contesting the Regional Chairmanship position. They are Mr Evans Yaw Dapaah, the incumbent Regional Chairman, Dr Frank Yirenkyi, Hajia Sherifa Selina Sekyere-Tijani and Mr Collins Yaw Ahenkora.

The Oti Regional NPP executive vetting, which began on Monday, is expected to end on Wednesday.

A total of 31 aspirants who successfully filed nominations to contest various regional executive positions are expected to be vetted.

The aspirants are expected to campaign ahead of the regional executive elections, where delegates will elect new officers to steer the affairs of the party in the region for the next four years.
