The Northern Regional Chairman of Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Yakubu Abdul Majeed, has called on Media House owners in the region to pay Journalists deserving salaries.

He added that the Journalists must be given requisite logistics and allowed to work professionally without any intimidation and interference.

Mr. Yakubu Majeed added media house owners and managers should create an enabling environment for personnel to operate effectively, intimating that practitioners cannot be that effective if they are not well motivated and encouraged in their line of duty.

“…Tamale for that matter, the whole region will be an enviable place if the media play its role efficiently but media practitioners cannot be that effective if they are not well motivated and encouraged. On this note, I will like to entreat media owners and managers to create conducive environment for media personnel to operate effectively. You can do this by paying media practitioners deserving salaries also providing them with the needed tools and equipment to work with” he emphasized.

The Chairman made these remarks over the weekend at a dinner night organized by the Northern Regional Executives of the GJA to dine and socialize with development partners at the Regional Coordinating Council.

Mr. Yakubu Majeed in his address assured of the commitment of the association to empower and improve the welfare of media practitioners in the region.

“May I reiterate that the GJA is committed to protecting all Journalists in the region; we are issuing a warning to all – never attack physically, any Journalist in their line of duty, for we will leave no stone unturned to getting justice for any of our journalists who are maltreated.”

He also took the opportunity to commended the Ghana Police Service for investigating the recent attack on Tamale Dagbon FM Journalist, Sadiq Gariba and subjecting the perpetrators to face the full rigors of the law.

“I want to be clear here anyone who feels defamed or maligned can call for retraction or go to court for redress, but not to launch physical attacks on us.

“Colleagues as human as we are, we are bound to make mistakes, so we should be quick to retract and apologize when the need arises and we should always be diligent in getting our facts right in order to avoid unwarranted attacks” he cautioned.
