The Ghana Police Service has foiled a suspected robbery operation targeting three banks at Labone in Accra, arresting one suspect and killing two others during a shootout.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after police received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. that a robbery syndicate was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank branches in the Labone area.
A police response team was immediately deployed to the area, where suspected members of the gang were spotted in two vehicles parked close to the banks.
According to the Police, one of the vehicles sped away after the suspects spotted the security team, triggering a chase. Officers eventually arrested one of the occupants, identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while another suspect managed to escape.
Occupants of the second vehicle also attempted to flee while allegedly firing at the pursuing officers.
The Police said officers returned fire, resulting in a shootout in which two suspects were killed.
Two vehicles allegedly used by the gang—a Toyota Highlander, registration number GS-1434-18, and a Hyundai Tucson, registration number GS-7915-17—were recovered.
A pistol was also retrieved from the scene.
Suspect Maazi is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Police commended the response team for successfully disrupting what it described as a planned robbery operation.
The Service also expressed appreciation to members of the public for providing information on suspected criminal activities, urging continued cooperation with the Police to help prevent crime.
The Police have not disclosed further details about the identities of the deceased suspects or the extent of investigations into the alleged robbery syndicate.
