A professor at the University of Ghana has been robbed at Dixcove, a community in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region.

Two Police officers who attempted to arrest the suspects have sustained serious injuries in the process.

Assembly member of Upper Dixcove, Joana Koomson, who narrated the incident to Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning show host, Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, indicated that the professor was in the community with some students to conduct research.

She added that the entire community was plunged into darkness on Valentine’s Day and whilst the professor and his students were outside, armed robbers besieged the place they were lodging.

“He is in the community with his students for research work. On Valentine’s Day, they were outside enjoying fresh air when the robbers attacked him. They cut through his window and entered his room, they were able to steal his laptop, phones, GHC2,000, and other personal belongings. They also destroyed other belongings in the room and left,” she indicated.

According to the Assembly woman, they informed the Police who quickly detailed some cops to the scene and in an attempt to arrest the suspects, two of cops including a CID were attacked with stones and cudgels leading to serious injuries.

“We informed the Police, and they came around immediately to ensure the suspects were arrested. They have so far arrested two of them from Lower Dixcove and the Laptop has since been retrieved. About five of them have bolted from the community” she added

According to her, the only major commercial activity for members of the community is fishing. However, due to a shortage of premix, most of the people have remained jobless.

She believes the situation is causing many of the young men in the community to rely on hard drugs and formation of ghettos to rob innocent people.

It would be recalled that a medical doctor stationed at the Dixcove government hospital was also robbed at his bungalow last year.

Traditional authorities at Upper Dixcove have expressed disappointment about the growing incidence of robbery in the community and are urging the Police to act swiftly to ensure safety in the community.

They have warned that if this continues, it could even affect tourism in the town which has Fort Metal Cross that attracts hundreds of tourist daily.
