The Ghana Police Service has rescued a 30-year-old man, identified as Bismarck Amo, who was allegedly kidnapped, tortured and subjected to extortion, following an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the arrest of four suspects.
The operation, code-named “Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators,” was conducted by the Central North Regional Police Command in collaboration with specialised police units from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters and the Ashanti Region.
According to a police press briefing issued on Monday, September 14, 2026, the operation was directly coordinated by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu.
The Central North Regional Police Command is led by DCOP Abraham Acquaye, with the Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Agyemang Badu, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and other specialised personnel participating in the operation.
The Police Service said the IGP’s strategic oversight enabled the various units to coordinate effectively across regional boundaries immediately after the alleged kidnapping was reported.
The operation ultimately led to the rescue of Amo and the arrest of four persons who police describe as key suspects in the alleged kidnapping, torture and extortion syndicate.
Four suspects arrested
The suspects currently in police custody are Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School and resident of Breman UGC; Charles Doku, 53, a security guard and resident of Breman UGC; Oteng Baffour, 31, an electrician and resident of Breman UGC; and Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, also known as “Culture”, whose age was not immediately confirmed.
Police said Kwarteng is also a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School.
The four suspects are assisting the police with investigations.
How the alleged kidnapping unfolded
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident began on September 3, 2026, after Amo allegedly defrauded Mavis Badu Acheampong of an unspecified amount of money.
According to the police, after Acheampong allegedly realised that she had been defrauded, she purportedly connived with her husband to deal with the victim.
The police briefing indicated that the investigation is focused on establishing the full circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction, the roles played by each of the suspects and the motive behind the actions that followed.
The Police Service said the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
The rescue forms part of the Ghana Police Service’s efforts to respond swiftly to serious organised crimes through intelligence gathering and coordinated operations involving specialised units.
Police are expected to provide further details as investigations progress and the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping, torture and extortion are established.
The suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
