A school building destroyed by the rainstorm in Bimbila

Over 500 houses in the Nanumba North Municipality in the Northern Region have been destroyed by heavy rainstorm leaving dozens of the residents stranded and homeless.

The Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr. Mauindaal Tigananya who confirmed the destruction to Journalists said the incident happened at about 6:30pm on Tuesday 16 February, 2021.

According to him, six communities in the municipality have been hit including Chamba in Bimbila, the backyard of Defence Minister-designate, Dominic Nitiwul who doubles as the Member of Parliament for the Area.

The NADMO Director said the Chamba Health Centre and six basic schools in the community have been badly affected too forcing the school authorities to halt teaching activities in the meantime.

The school buildings as well as teaching and learning materials have been damaged necessitating the closure of the schools.

The headmaster of the Chamba Primary (A) in a media interaction said effective academic activities cannot continue because both teachers and the pupils have lost their books, chalk and other learning materials to the rainstorm.

He has therefore appealed to the government and other development partners to come to their aid and assist them with temporary structures so that the children can resume school activities soon.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Director of NADMO announced that a team has been dispatched to conduct an assessment and level of devastation occasioned by the downpour.

“Currently, my men are on the field doing the assessment; so about six communities have been affected and we are yet to go there to do assessment. But, so far, this is what has happened in Chamba township. Six schools and the Health Centre have been affected and the whole town has no light because about 16 high tension poles have broken down”, he explained.
