Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta has visited some road construction works damaged by last Monday floods in many parts of the northern region.

The downpour wreaked havoc on several communities in the regional capital, Tamale and its adjoining areas after hours of torrential rain.

Dozens of houses and farmlands were submerged and properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis were carried away in notable flood prone areas.

The Minister who arrived in Tamale on Wednesday (1 September, 2021) for a two-day working tour of the region, had first-hand briefing by engineers of the relevant agencies under the Ministry of Roads and Highways in the region.

He inspected the major storm drain at Kalariga that pass through Vittin Target Hills and the filling station that was submerged in the metropolis during the downpour.

He later also inspected the ongoing feeder road project connecting the Nanton district and the Savelugu municipal which has parts of it washed away.

Mr. Amoako Atta in an interview with Journalists said the destruction caused by the floods is terrible and requires rapid response.

On the Tamale floods, the Minister said there is the need to redesign the city internal roads and construct more drainage systems to redirect and control particularly rain waters in the area.

He emphasized that there is a big problem with the internal roads which he said must be looked at properly to avert future recurrence of the floods.

However, Mr. Amoako Atta added, “And If we don’t engage in that assignment, Tamale will continue to have that problem anytime it rains. And you realize that it has also affected many of the internal roads”.

The Roads and Highways Minister hinted of the possibility to repackage a section of the stretch where the road is virtually cut-off.

He said the degree of damage on the road is unacceptable and therefore a bigger culvert will be constructed to carry the volumes of rain waters combined with a number of running streams along the road.

The Minister observed some of these projects were poorly coordinated and executed and such matters he added would be addressed in due time.
