The Leader of the Anbariya Sunni Community in the Northern Region, Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria, has reportedly passed.
The sad incident occurred on Monday, 7th September, 2026, in the Greater Accra Region where he was receiving medical care.
The Second in Command, Sheikh Abubakar Tanko Is-haq together with Elders of the group in a statement signed by it’s General Secretary, Dr. Issah Yakubu Abdallah, said: “It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved Imam, the Director and Leader of the Anbariya Sunni Community; Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria”.
The deceased is described as a great leader, an Islamic scholar par excellent, and a faithful servant of Allah.
”His death is a great loss to us all. We pray that Allah forgives him, accepts his good deeds and grants him Jannatul Firduas.
”May Allah give his immediate family, the Anbariya Sunni Community and the entire Muslim Ummah patience and strength to accept this” the statement added.
Meanwhile, The Custodian has gathered that the Islamic prayer (Janazah) will take place today at the Anbariya M/A School in Tamale at 10:00am before the interment at the Nyanshegu public cemetery.
Zakaria studied at the Islamic University of Madinah in the 1970s after receiving a scholarship. He returned to the Institute to teach after he graduated in 1985 with a BA in Islamic law and an M.A. in Islamic theology.
He later served as an Imam in Canada from 1997 until May 2007, when he returned to Ghana to head the Anbariya Islamic Institute after the death it’s founder Sheikh Yussif Sualih Ajura fondly remembered as Afa Ajura who died in 2004.
