MTN Ghana has equipped Small and Medium size Enterprises (SMEs) in the Northern Region with training in digital and financial literacy, branding and packaging and business operational efficiency.
The training forms of the company’s year-long SME Accelerate Programme being implemented across the country.
Addressing Journalists on the sideline of the two-day event, the SME Sales Senior Manager, Mr. Abubakari Sadiq Mohammed highlighted the significant role the SME sector contribute to the nation’s socioeconomic development.
“The economy today is being driven by the SMEs. They’re so powerful and so important that they contribute not less than 70 percent to our GDP and in terms of employment, they contribute about 85 percent to Ghana’s employment” he stated.
However, Mr. Mohammed observed that some of these businesses lack access funding support and digital technology to scale up.

“Some of them are struggling with funding and some of them also have issues regarding web presence – meaning they are doing business in Ghana but nobody outside Ghana knows about them.
“But we also want them to go global. As part of our commitment, MTN Business is supporting them with this capacity building and information where to get their funding” he said.
The MTN Ghana SME Accelerate programme, demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to grow, digitise and compete more effectively in the evolving local and global economies.
About one thousand entrepreneurs were empowered last year and the number is expected to increase this year.
In his remarks, the Sales Manager said the company intend to train about 1,500 small and medium-sized enterprises nationwide.
Meanwhile, some of the beneficiaries described the training as innovative and insightful.
Madam Deborah Baba, one of the trainees said the workshop has changed her perception about branding and promised to implement the knowledge she has acquired in the two-day training.
