The main contender of the Minority Leader of Parliament on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party in the Tamale South Constituency, Hon Yakubu Yussif on Wednesday registered for the voters’ identification card at the Gukpegu-Tua Suniya primary school registration center.

The Member of Parliament hopeful was accompanied by the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale, Hon Musah Iddrisu (Superior) and the 2012 Parliamentary Candidate of the NPP, Mr. Mohammed Shamsudeen Pegu. The team later monitored the fourth phase voter registration exercise at other centres.

Mr. Yakubu Yussif in an interview with THE CUSTODIAN said the registration exercise was smooth, calm and peaceful, commending agents of the various political parties particularly the governing New Patriotic Party and opposition National Democratic Congress for their collaboration and cooperation with the Electoral Commission.

He believed the peaceful atmosphere since the beginning of this constitutional exercise has strengthened the over two decade old democratic practice in the country.

Right to vote

Mr. Yussif noted the power to vote political leadership in Ghana is the sole responsibility of Ghanaians as enshrined in the constitution of the Republic, arguing therefore that, the compilation of the new voters’ register will give only eligible Ghanaian voters the opportunity to vote the people who have submitted themselves to lead the country in the 2020 December 7, general elections.

The CUSTODIAN can report as at Wednesday July 23, about 58, 086 prospective voters had been registered in the Tamale South constituency.

However, the New Patriotic Party candidate who is also the Programs Manager at the Business Development Ministry is optimistic that more people will turn out to register before the close of the process on August 3.

Mr. Yussif promised to provide the needed development for his constituents, adding the Member of Parliament for the Tamale South Constituency, Haruna Iddrisu has failed to fulfill his social contract with the people in 16 years.

This is the second time the duo are vying to lead the people of Tamale South.

In 2016, the Tamale South constituency lawmaker promised to garner about 70, 000 votes to beat the NPP candidate but ended up 52, 235 votes whereas the NPP Yakubu Yussif appreciated the votes of the party to 18, 932.

This was significant increment from the 2012 results where the previous parliamentary candidate of the NPP had 16,395.
