The First Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tolon constituency in the Northern Region, Alhaji Habib Iddrisu, has dispelled the rumors that there is going to be a by-election in his constituency.
The New Patriotic Party (MP) lawmaker stated without any ambiguity that nobody has filed any election petition at any court in the country to challenge his 2024 electoral victory.
Some members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the northern region including senior figures of the party claims that the Tolon seat is next to be declared vacant after the impending Kpandai rerun.
Responding the claim, the MP in a local television interview in Tamale on Monday, January 5, said those making such assertions are only engaged in self-delusion.
”Those saying that are ignorant of what they’re talking about. You remember that they have been saying this for about four years now.
”Their Constituency Communications Officer – Seidu Fiter and the party [NDC] members held a press conference but nothing happened. After the election, there’s no case in any court in Ghana challenging the 2024 election results of Tolon constituency,” he emphasised.
In addition, the Deputy Minority Whip argued that the period for anyone to file a parliamentary petition is long overdue, stating the law under Section 18 of the Representation of the People Law, 1992 (P.N.D.C.L. 284) gives a 21-day statutory window of opportunity for anyone to file a parliamentary election petition after the results has been gazetted.
