The Paramount Chief of Tolon of Traditional Area, Naa Major (Rtd) Sulemana Abubakari I, has died. The saddened development occurred on Sunday, August 23, 2026, in Tolon.
The death of Major Sulemana as he was affectionately called comes few weeks after the death of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II.
This unfortunate news has further plunged the Dagbon Kingdom into a state of grief and agony.
Born in 1943 at Tali, a community near Tolon, to Naa Alhassan Sulemana (who served as Chief of Tali and later Tolon), the venerable retired Soldier began his early childhood education in Tolon in 1949.
He later attended the Kalpohini Middle School in Tamale and subsequently graduated from the T.I. Ahmadiyya Secondary School in 1961.
Following the death of his father, Major Sulemana was enskined as Regent of Tolon in 2001, until 2019 when he was made the substantive Tolon Naa after performing his father’s funeral rites in line with the Dagbon peace roadmap.
Military Career:
The late Tolon Naa was Commissioned as an officer into the Ghana Armed Forces in 1963. He served initially at the Calvary unit and acted as an escort to Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Rose through the ranks to become the Commanding Officer of the Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment in 1980.
He was later forced into self-exile in 1982 during the PNDC era, but returned to Ghana in 2000 following a democratic change in government.
President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2001 appointed him to the National Security Advisory Corps.
