Hundreds of residents left homeless in parts of the northern regional capital, Tamale, and parts of the Sagnarigu municipality

Hundreds of residents in parts of the northern regional capital, Tamale, and parts of the Sagnarigu municipality have been left homeless after hours of torrential rain Monday morning, 30 August, 2021.

Dozens of houses have been submerged at Fuo and Taha in the Sagnarigu municipality forcing the inhabitants to leave their homes for safety.

The residents have lost count of their belongings worth thousands of Ghana cedis carried away by the floods which started in the early hours of the day. Many people were also trapped in their homes due to the downpour.

Some crop farmlands have also been submerged and others washed away by the floods.

Mr. Abdul Samed, one of the affected residents at Fuo attributed the situation to lack of drainage facility connecting the major bridge in the community.

He narrated that, “The main cause of this flooding is lack of adequate flow from where they have constructed the bridge. It bounces back because there is not enough space for the water to flow out, so the excessive water bounces back and enters the various houses”.

He indicated the community has been hit badly this year, explaining that, “We thought we would have had a remedy to the situation this year but no it is rather the opposite.”

“Not even a single shirt has been removed from my house and what you see wearing is what is left with me. Even cash and valuable assets – I have two fridges and a whole set of electronic gadgets”.

He, therefore, appealed for timely intervention from the government to salvage the situation.
