The Northern Regional Correspondent of TV Africa, Mr. Baba Kamil (Assault Victim)

The Northern Regional Correspondent of TV Africa, Mr. Baba Kamil was hit this morning in Tamale by a stray bullet allegedly fired indiscriminately by personnel of the Ghana Police Service in the Tamale metropolis when they raided the Changli community this dawn.

The journalist went into the area to cover the chaotic disturbances between the residents and armed police officers.

However, thecustodianghonline.com has gathered the reporter was allegedly hit in the line of duty. 

He was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital by some of the police officers for treatment and hours later discharged to go home.

He explained in an exclusive interview to thecustodianghonline.com that, the officers allegedly fired several shots sporadically in the air when they arrived in the area and he tried taking cover before he got hit by the stray bullet that allegedly came from the direction of the police.

He recounted, “To be on the safer side, I decided not to run because they were shooting into the community sporadically and when I was about to turn, it hit my head and I fell. It was then that I raised my microphone to indicate that I was a press man.”

“When they (police) advanced towards me, some of them came and realized that I was a press man and the other officers said, let’s go, let’s go and they moved their vehicle a little distanced from where I was and I stood up and said you must send me to the hospital, you are supposed to protect me, you shot me and want to leave me here to die” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Kwabena Otuo Acheampong has confirmed investigations are underway on the alleged shooting of the TV Africa Journalist by armed police officers in the region. 

He appealed to eyewitnesses to help the police with relevant information to assist the investigations.
