The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa, has commended the leadership of the National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) in Ukraine for the plans they put in place to give assistance to its members in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
The Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Ghana’s Parliament claimed that, “As a former NUGS president I am very proud of the NUGS Executives. Philip Osei Bonsu and his team have done really well. Indeed, as far back as January, they have shown me an evacuation plan they created and they had even shared it with the Embassy in Berne(Switzerland), it’s just that they did not get a response”.
Mr. Ablakwa shared his admiration during an interview on ‘Okosiisen’ on Asempa Fm this afternoon.
“In that evacuation plan, they had discussed amongst themselves where to meet, How to quickly communicate, come together, and which border point they should be headed to and we must commend them for a good job”, he added.
The Member of Parliament went on to endorse the policy direction of the Government of Ghana to evacuate Ghanaians caught up in the invasion of Ukriane by Russia. But raised concerns that the number of Ghanaians still in Ukraine is higher than those who have been rescued via borders.
“So far, when you look at the number, those who have crossed the border to safety are still in the minority. It is just about Four Hundred and something. I spoke with the students leadership and we have not hit 500 yet. That should tell you that we have a majority still in Ukraine, about 70 percent who we need to keep in our prayers and thoughts”.
