The Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions Committee has marked International Workers’ Day with a strong message of solidarity for Ghanaian workers, while raising concerns over worsening labour conditions across the country.
In a statement issued to commemorate the occasion, the Caucus highlighted the critical role of workers in driving national development and sustaining the economy. They praised the resilience, dedication, and sacrifices of Ghanaians across various sectors, noting that the country’s progress is built on the daily contributions of its workforce.
According to the statement, farmers continue to play a vital role in ensuring food security, while industrial workers contribute to production and economic growth. It also recognised the efforts of health professionals, teachers, security personnel, traders, and artisans, describing their services as indispensable to the nation’s stability and future.
“The strength of our economy, the stability of our communities, and the promise of our future are firmly anchored in the daily efforts of our workforce,” the statement emphasised.
However, the Caucus expressed deep concern about what it described as worsening economic hardships facing workers under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama. It argued that instead of being supported and rewarded, many workers are grappling with difficult conditions that threaten their livelihoods.
Particular attention was drawn to cocoa farmers, who the Caucus described as the backbone of Ghana’s agricultural exports. They noted that these farmers are struggling with declining and uncompetitive producer prices, which continue to erode incomes and create uncertainty in cocoa-growing communities.
Beyond agriculture, the statement highlighted growing anxieties across multiple sectors regarding job security. The Caucus cited concerns about alleged mass dismissals and unstable employment conditions, warning that such developments are leaving many families without reliable sources of income and deepening economic uncertainty nationwide.
The statement also pointed to challenges within the education and health sectors. Teachers, it said, are facing prolonged delays in salary payments and postings, while health professionals have been forced to stage protests in order to receive their rightful compensation. These issues, the Caucus argued, not only affect the welfare of workers but also have broader implications for service delivery and national development.
“These conditions are not only unjust; they undermine morale, productivity, and the very fabric of national development,” the statement noted.
While acknowledging the significance of May Day celebrations, the Minority Caucus stressed that the moment should go beyond ceremonial recognition. It called on the government to take concrete steps to address the challenges facing workers by implementing fair and equitable policies.
Among its key demands, the Caucus urged authorities to prioritise job protection, ensure fair and competitive remuneration, clear outstanding wage arrears, and restore confidence across all sectors of the economy. It maintained that such measures are essential to improving working conditions and sustaining economic growth.
The group also strongly condemned what it described as the continued unfair treatment of Ghanaian workers and called for immediate action to reverse the trend. It further encouraged workers, labour unions, and other stakeholders to remain united in defending the rights, dignity, and welfare of the labour force.
Referencing this year’s theme by the International Trade Union Confederation Africa—“Resetting for Humanism, Peace, Multilateralism, and Socioeconomic Inclusion”—the Caucus reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for policies that place people at the centre of development.
As the country joins the rest of the world to mark International Workers’ Day, the Minority Caucus concluded its message with a note of appreciation to Ghanaian workers, acknowledging their enduring contributions and sacrifices.
“To every worker across the country, your efforts do not go unnoticed. Your sacrifices are the backbone of our nation,” the statement said.
