Manchester United winger Amad Diallo emerged as Ivory Coast’s hero as the Elephants kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Group E.
The talented forward came off the bench to score a decisive 90th-minute winner, ensuring the African champions began their tournament journey with three valuable points.
Amad’s absence from Emerse Fae’s starting lineup raised eyebrows before kick-off, with many expecting the Manchester United star to feature from the first whistle.
However, the 22-year-old responded in the best possible manner after being introduced early in the second half. Replacing Bazoumana Toure in the 55th minute, Amad injected pace, creativity, and energy into an Ivory Coast side that had struggled to impose themselves during long stretches of the contest.
The decisive moment arrived in the final minute of normal time. Defender Wilfried Singo produced a powerful run down the right flank, surging forward from deep inside his own half.
After carrying the ball into a dangerous area, Singo delivered a perfectly timed pass into the path of Amad, who calmly side-footed his effort beyond Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez.
The goal sparked scenes of jubilation among the Ivory Coast players, coaching staff, and supporters, as the Elephants secured a memorable victory.
For Ecuador, the defeat was particularly painful given their impressive recent form. Entering the tournament unbeaten in 19 matches, the South Americans looked confident and composed throughout much of the first half. They dominated possession, pressed aggressively, and created the better opportunities during the opening 30 minutes.
John Yeboah came close to giving Ecuador the lead when his effort rattled the crossbar, while Alan Minda also struck the woodwork shortly afterward.
The Ecuadorians appeared to be in complete control and were outperforming expectations against the reigning African champions. Their intensity both on and off the ball caused Ivory Coast numerous problems, and it seemed only a matter of time before they found a breakthrough.
However, despite their bright start, Ecuador failed to capitalize on their opportunities. As the match progressed, Ivory Coast gradually grew into the contest and began to threaten more regularly.
Young winger Yan Diomande was one of the standout performers for Fae’s side, constantly troubling the Ecuadorian defense with his direct running and movement. Yet, while his creativity was evident, the final touch often eluded him.
Ivory Coast nearly took the lead in the second half when Elye Wahi struck the crossbar, signaling a shift in momentum. The introductions of Amad Diallo and Ange-Yoan Bonny further transformed the game, bringing renewed energy and attacking purpose. Ecuador increasingly found themselves pinned back as the Elephants searched for a winner.
Their persistence was finally rewarded in dramatic fashion when Amad struck late to seal the victory.
The goal not only handed Ivory Coast a perfect start to their World Cup campaign but also marked their first World Cup win in 12 years. For Emerse Fae’s men, it was a statement result that highlighted their resilience and determination, while Ecuador were left to reflect on missed opportunities and the end of a remarkable unbeaten run.
