The Northern Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has mourned the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II.
”The Northern Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) extends its deepest condolences to the people of Dagbon and to the bereaved family of the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II”.
In a statement dated 13th July, 2026, the GJA Northern Regional Chairman, Mr. Yakubu Abdul Majeed, noted that the passing of Ya-Na Abukari II is not only a great loss to his family and the Kingdom of Dagbon but also to the entire nation.
According to him, the wisdom, leadership and commitment to peace of the late traditional ruler were instrumental in sustaining harmony in the Dagbon kingdom and the nation as a whole.
On the back of this, Mr. Yakubu said the GJA is deeply saddened by his demise. He revealed the open-door policy of the Dagbon King propelled the work of media practitioners in the Northern Region.
”His support for media practitioners in the region and his open-door relationship with journalists contributed immensely to our work of promoting peace and accurate reportage” the Chairman stated.
He added: “His absence will be greatly felt. We, however, take solace in his wise counsel and admonitions, which will continue to guide and shape our professional conduct.”
Meanwhile, the GJA has called on all Journalists in the region to be circumspect in their reportage on the death, burial rites and other traditional funeral customs of the late Ya-Na.
The statement further encouraged the media to be guided in their coverage by the principles of accuracy, sensitivity and professionalism in a manner that promotes peace, unity and cohesion in the Dagbon traditional area.
”We further urge media practitioners to adhere strictly to established protocols and to the ethics of the journalism profession in reporting on the passing of the Overlord and related funeral rites.
”At this difficult moment for Dagbon, we believe the media have a critical role to play in promoting our culture, tolerance and peace” the statement admonished.
Mr. Yakubu Abdul Majeed said the GJA stands in full solidarity with the people of Dagbon as they mourn the late King.
