The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the northern region has refuted media reports that the party’s National Organiser, Sammi Awuku was involved in another accident whilst on a campaign tour in the Tolon constituency last Friday.
The Regional Communication Director, Mr. Sule Salifu in a statement said the inferno happened whilst the campaign team including Mr. Awuku was far away from the scene of the incident.
He said the team together with Mr. Sammi Awuku at that hour visited the Tolon Naa, Major Sulemana Abubakari (Rtd) to pay homage at his palace when the Tundra vehicle mounted with public address system belonging to the party’s Tolon parliamentary candidate, Habib Iddrisu caught fire.
He added this was after the campaign team had visited the Kpendua, Kasulyili, Gbrimani and Nyankpala communities to communicate the message of the NPP ahead of the 7 December general election to voters in those areas.
“A mini rally was organized at the Tolon Market Square to wrap up the campaign for the area. But as protocol demanded, the campaign team moved to the Tolon Chief Palace to pay a courtesy call on the Chief of Tolon, Major Sulemana Abubakari before visiting the rally grounds. The campaign car equipped with sound systems belonging to the Parliamentary Candidate for Tolon, Hon. Habib Iddrisu which was stationed at the rally grounds caught fire” Mr. Sule Salifu explained.
The Communication Director reiterated that this is contrary to news that the NPP stalwart escaped death again. He noted several distressed calls were made to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), lamenting the vehicle was burnt to ashes before personnel of the GNFS could arrive.
Thecustodianghonline.com can report that no one was injured. Efforts to get the GNFS to establish the cause of the fire has not been successful, however, sources closer to the Tolon NPP campaign team suspected electrical fault.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sule assured that the regional campaign and constituency teams are poised to win more parliamentary seats in the region and give President Nana Akufo-Addo a resounding victory in the December polls.
