The Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Walewale constituency of the North East region has maintained the seat for the ruling party after yesterday’s general elections.
Hajia One as she is affectionately called by her sympathizers and supporters of the NPP tallied about 2000 votes more than her closet opponent from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Certified results of the parliamentary election shows that the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Development Authority (NDA) pulled 32, 295 votes representing 51. 22% against the 30, 295 votes representing 48.54% her main contender, Alhaji Abdallah Abubakari, the former Northern Regional Minister had.
The third parliamentary candidate in the contest, Ibrahim Mubarak of the National Democratic Party (NDP) also pulled 150 votes.
Meanwhile, 63, 051 voters turnout to cast their ballots in the constituency and some 1, 630 of the total votes cast were rejected ballots. The governing NPP at end of the polls in the North East region have won four out of the six constituencies in the area, namely: Yagaba Kubor, Yunyoo, Chereponi and the Walewale seats.
Similarly, the party has lost the Gambaga/Nalerigu and Bunprugu constituencies which was occupied by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama and the North East Regional Minister, Hon Solomon Boar respectively.
