The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Eastern Region appears to be embroiled in confusion over what has been described as surreptitious meetings between some regional officers and party cadres.
It is believed that the Chairperson of the Eastern Regional Council of Elders, Mr Antwi Boasiako Sekyere who is also a staunch cadre together with his allies is meeting with other colleagues, ostensibly to change the leadership and direction of the party ahead of the 2024 general election.
The meetings, according to NDC insiders, are also part of anti-Mahama campaign as some unrepentant cadres have vowed to halt former President John Mahama’s ambition of leading the opposition party for the next polls.
However, Mr Boasiako Sekyere has been given a strong warning to suspend the “unprogrammed tour” he has been conducting in the region in these past days.
A statement signed by the Eastern Regional Secretary of the main opposition party, Comrade Cudjoe Adukpo, claimed that the genuineness behind the tour is questionable in view of the fact that notifications are not sent out to Constituency Executive Committees and yet branch executives and cadres are invited for engagements.
Dated 9th August, 2021, the statement indicated that Mr. Boasiako Sekyere and his group have so far visited Okere, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Nkawkaw, Mpraeso and Abetifi constituencies.
The tour, the statement maintained, was alien to the Regional Executive Committee since no proposal has been communicated for the consideration of such activity.
“Moreover, the Eastern Regional Cadres Front, in an official letter to the Regional Secretariat, has denied knowledge of such programme.
“Our checks from the National Secretariat also indicate the said tour does not have the endorsement of the party’s Functional Executive Committee,” the statement said.
The Eastern Regional Secretary expressed worry at the content of the messages being shared at the various engagements by Mr. Boasiako Sekyere and his team.
Even though the regional secretary did not disclose the tone of the messages, he cautioned that such communications have the potential to provoke others and create anarchy within the party.
“We are therefore calling on Mr. Antwi Bosiako Sekyere and his team to immediately halt the tour as same is brewing serious tension at the party’s base- the branch level.
“As a senior party man who currently chairs the Regional Council of Elders, Mr. Antwi Bosiako Sekyere should be mindful of the fact that the party has structures and as such, shouldn’t embark on activities that undermine same,” Mr Adukpo said.
He warned that the Regional Secretariat will be left with no other option than to trigger the party’s disciplinary process and other obtrusive actions to stop the team from further engagements if they fail to suspend the tour.
The secretariat, he said, is focused on re-organising the party in accordance with directives of the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) and therefore will not condone any distraction and acts that may disunite the party’s base.
