The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Haruna Mohammed, has said the governing party believes in consensus building, therefore, the need to broaden consultation of all stakeholders before fixing a date for the much-talked about presidential and parliamentary elections.

“There was no any difficulty at all, in fact, there was no any debate at all yesterday. The New Patriotic Party is a party that has a lot of understanding – a party that knows where we come from, a party that has always been the pacesetters of democracy in Ghana.

“And in fact, there was no difficult at the steering committee, there wasn’t any difficulty at NEC nor National Council. What happened on this particular discussion was that we had to reach consensus, we all agree, we took several factors into consideration and we agreed and reported to National Executive Committee well affirmed by the National Council that we need to postpone the discussion on the presidential and parliamentary discussions for further consultations” he explained.

Prof Haruna Mohammed as he is popularly called maintained that the NPP will build consensus and come out with a date that will be generally agreed by all for the unity of the party, adding elections 2024 is a crucial one that everybody in the party must come on board to enhance participation.

The Deputy General indicated there has always been that understanding that has always come out in every NPP meeting and “I think that we strive on the democracy that we have and we all understand that at this era that we’re we need to very careful to make sure we take the right decision that will support and be in the interest and vision of the New Patriotic Party to break the 8”.

Consultations

Mr. Haruna stressed that various groups and special wings such as the youth, women wings and nasara were all consulted prior to the meeting.

“Consultations has been very wide and as Secretary to the committee that recommended to the National Council on the timelines of the elections, I can tell you we have done thorough consultations. We consulted the Steering Committee of the party, the National Executive members, we consulted the Regional Chairmen on their own, we consulted the special wings of our party – the National Youth wing, the Women’s wing and the Nasara and I can give the list of all those we consulted including the President, the Non-Executive Forum and the Council of Elders of our party” he emphasized.
