Eight aspirants have been recommended by a vetting committee to contest in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries in three ‘orphan’ constituencies in the Ashanti Region.
The contestants will wrestle for the seats in Ejura, Asawase, and Sekyere Afram Plains.
A total of nine candidates were expected to face the Charles Dwamena-led Committee but eight of them showed up, except Joseph Owusu from the Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday (14 November) the Chairman of the Regional Elections Committee, Charles Dwamena, said the vetting of Owusu has been put on hold pending a decision from the party’s national leadership.
The former MP for New Edubiase is running unopposed, top party officials have confirmed to Asaase News.
The NPP lost all four constituencies in the 2020 elections despite an intensified campaign to win all 47 seats in its stronghold.
The party will have a tough task to resolve all internal issues in the Fomena Constituency as some members kick against allowing the current MP and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, to run unopposed.
Electoral processes in that constituency remain on hold, pending a final decision by the party.
