The governing Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed four of its rebel members from the party.
The expelled members are Hopeson Adorye, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique.
The four have been found guilty of endorsing failed NPP presidential aspirant Alan Kyerematen who resigned from the governing party to stand as an independent flagbearer in the next general election.
The endorsement is in violation of the party’s constitution as it has officially elected Presidential Candidate, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 polls.
In a statement issued by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party expressed concern over the actions of the individuals in question, citing violations of key constitutional provisions.
“The NPP entreats its members to remain true to their duties as per Article 3(5) of the party Constitution.
“We further call upon our members to bear in mind that the Party’s focus is to unite its ranks and rally the support of Ghanaians to make history by winning the 2024 general elections,” he stated.
The decision is based on specific constitutional clauses, with emphasis on Article 3(5) (A) (4), which obliges members to “abide by and publicly uphold the decisions of the Party.”
Additionally, Article 3(9) (1) outlines that members who endorse or support another political party automatically forfeit their NPP membership.
A Member of the Party, who stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the Party, or who joins or declares his or her support for another Political Party, or for an independent candidate, when the Party has sponsored a candidate in a general or by-election, automatically forfeits his or her membership of the Party”.
The party stressed that in spite of their flagrant breach of the NPP Constitution particularly Articles 3(5) (A)(4) and 3(9)(1), the four still hold themselves out as members of the NPP
Justin Kodua reinforced the gravity of the breach, asserting that the four individuals ‘are no longer members of the Party’ and urging other members to focus on the party’s unity and the upcoming 2024 general elections.
