Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, leader of the group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid, says all 60 MPs backing the former Vice President have done so of their own accord.
Speaking to Citi News after a meeting with Dr. Bawumia, Ampratwum-Sarpong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Mampong, said that efforts are ongoing to persuade other MPs who have yet to publicly declare their support.
“The processes are about to commence to select our leadership in the party, and one of the key ones is the flagbearership, and that is where the focus is. Our MPs — the number being 88 — are the political front of the party when we are in opposition. So that responsibility has just come upon us, and we have to take the mantle and do what is right.”
He stressed that the MPs were not coerced into supporting Dr. Bawumia, noting that each member made their decision independently.
“…MPs on their volition have made their own decisions and decided to align with A, B, C, and in Parliament as at today, 60 of the 88 have indicated and declared that they want to side with their colleagues to champion the cause of Dr. Bawumia to win the flagbearership and to lead the party into the elections in 2028. So it is a voluntary thing, nobody was pressured.”
