The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, in relation to the shooting incident that targeted former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, on June 21, 2026.
Details of the development were shared in a press release posted on the Ghana Police Service Facebook page on June 22. According to the statement, the suspect voluntarily presented himself to authorities.
“The suspect reported himself to the Regional Police Headquarters on 22nd June 2026 and was subsequently handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to assist ongoing investigations into the incident,” the statement indicated.
Following his surrender, police carried out searches at key locations tied to the suspect. It added that, “A search conducted on his vehicle and at his residence at Kwabenya led to the retrieval of 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of 45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of 40 calibre ammunition, additional loaded magazines, and two Glock pistols; one of which is registered in his name.” The discovery of the firearms and ammunition has become a central part of the ongoing probe into the events of June 21.
The investigation did not end with Israel Kwadwo Safo’s arrest. Police efforts have since expanded, resulting in more individuals being taken into custody.
Further investigations also led to the arrest of two additional suspects, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson, in connection with the case. With these arrests, the total number of suspects linked to the shooting has now risen to three.
All three individuals are currently cooperating with law enforcement. “All the suspects are currently in Police custody assisting investigations and will be put before the court on 23rd June 2026,” the Police said. Their appearance in court today is expected to provide more clarity on the charges they may face and the next steps in the judicial process.
The incident that sparked the arrests occurred when the former MP attempted to access her brother’s residence. It is recalled that Adwoa Safo was shot when she tried to enter the Kwabenya residence of her brother, Kwadwo Safo.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, and police have not yet released further details about what led to the confrontation at the Kwabenya property.
In the aftermath of the attack, concerns were raised about the former legislator’s health and recovery. Providing reassurance to the public, the family of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo confirmed that the former MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo is in a stable condition and responding positively to medical treatment following Sunday’s shooting incident.
The update has eased some public anxiety, as many in Dome-Kwabenya and beyond continue to follow the case closely.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to a thorough and transparent investigation. Officers from the Criminal Investigations Department are leading the case, with support from regional units.
The retrieval of multiple firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition has heightened the seriousness of the matter, prompting calls from community leaders for a swift resolution.
Residents of Kwabenya have expressed shock over the incident, noting that the area is generally peaceful. The involvement of high-profile individuals has drawn national attention, with many awaiting the outcome of today’s court proceedings.
Legal analysts suggest that the charges could range from illegal possession of firearms to attempted murder, depending on the evidence gathered by investigators.
For now, the focus remains on the ongoing police work and the court process scheduled for 23rd June 2026. The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course. They also encouraged anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward to aid the investigation.
