Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament(MP) for Karaga Constituency, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has thrown his support behind Mr. Awentami Paul Afoko for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He described the former National Chairman as the right leader to reposition the party ahead of future elections, noting that it is now in opposition and requires experienced hands.
Speaking during a courtesy call on him by some NPP leaders and aspirants at his private residence, Dr. Amin Adam said his endorsement was based on competence and the candidate’s ability to lead the party back to power
.“I support Paul Afoko for National Chairman,” he declared to the admiration of his guests. According to him, leadership choices within the party should be guided by competence rather than popularity.
“We know the serious people who can bring us back to power. We do not follow the masses to choose someone to support; we support those we believe have the potential to win and lead the party,” he said.
He added that while his loyalty to the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is not in doubt, he believes Mr. Awentami Paul Afoko stands tall when it comes to helping the party reclaim power.
Dr. Amin Adam stressed that his confidence in Mr. Afoko stems from their previous working relationship and his assessment of Afoko’s leadership and fundraising abilities.
“I have worked with Paul Afoko, and I know he is competent. He can also help raise funds for the party because we need money as a party in opposition,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Mr Afoko has been touring the country with a message of reuniting, rebuilding, and returning to the NPP to power under what he calls the 3Rs Agenda.
He’s been pushing to reunite factions that split after the 2024 polls leadership crisis, and to bring back members who left or were sidelined.
The Former National Chairman has also been campaigning on giving more power and respect to polling station executives, constituency executives, and the rank-and-file.
Key promises of better welfare, logistics, and inclusion in party decision-making have also been highlighted as Afoko frames himself as the leader who can re-organize the NPP’s base after the 2024 loss.
