President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq as Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the appointment on March 1, 2026. In a statement accompanied by his official portrait, the Ministry confirmed that Baba Sadiq will represent Ghana in Nigeria, pending the completion of the required diplomatic formalities.
He succeeds Baba Jamal, who stepped down from the role to contest the Ayawaso East by-election. Baba Jamal later won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries and is now the party’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
Okaikwei Central contest
Baba Sadiq previously contested the Okaikwei Central parliamentary seat in the 2024 general elections against Patrick Yaw Boamah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The closely fought race initially saw provisional results indicating a victory for Boamah. However, protests by the NDC prompted the Electoral Commission (EC) to review the figures. Following the review, Baba Sadiq was declared Member of Parliament-elect.
According to the EC’s returning officer, out of 30,322 total votes cast, Baba Sadiq secured 15,383 votes, narrowly defeating Boamah, who polled 14,949 votes. The declaration followed the NDC’s insistence that results from a majority of the constituency’s polling stations be used to announce the outcome.
While the NDC argued that results from 78% of the 141 polling stations were sufficient for a declaration, the NPP disagreed. Tensions escalated, and some NDC supporters reportedly thronged the collation centre during the dispute.
The election process also experienced delays on December 7 at the Ansurudeen Islamic School polling station, where disagreements over limited space and the number of polling agents led to disturbances and the destruction of voting booths.
Despite these challenges, collation was completed, and Baba Sadiq’s victory was confirmed nearly 48 hours after polls closed.
However, after a subsequent re-collation by the EC, Patrick Yaw Boamah was declared the winner of the Okaikwei Central seat. Boamah secured 21,099 votes to retain his parliamentary seat, while Baba Sadiq, who had earlier been declared the winner, obtained 19,368 votes.
