The government of Ghana has provided over $2 million dollar worth of Mobile Identification Devices and Mobile Devices Management Systems to equip the Ghana Police Service in the fight against crime in the country.
With support from the Margins Group, an indigenous Ghanaian Identity Systems Company, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia handed over the equipment to the Inspector General of Police.
“To support the digitization of the Ghana Police Service and the fight against crime, today, I presented over $2 million worth of mobile identification devices and a Mobile Device Management System to the Ghana Police Service donated by the Margins Group, an indigenous Ghanaian Identity Systems Company.”
The Vice President stated the devices will give personnel of the Ghana Police Service real time access to data on individuals, vehicles, and criminal histories in crime combating.
He added the mobile devices and systems will capture the unique biometric and biographic information of individuals, verify vehicle registration, driver’s license, road worthiness certificate and insurance, and match the data against other databases including the National Identification Authority’s database.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been championing the agenda of digitalizing the Ghanaian economy with the introduction of the biometric national identity register, digital property addressing system, mobile money interoperability, and the paperless port operations among others.
Meanwhile, the ongoing public sector reforms is anchored on the aggrieve digitalization agenda to make public institutions more efficient, productive, accountable, and responsive.
The government has also set out policies to address the numerous bottlenecks and fight corruption in the public sector ecosystems.
