Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has given assurance that he is committed to ensure the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) breaks the eight-year electoral cycle no matter who becomes the flagbearer of the party.

The governing NPP and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are the two dominant parties that have won elections in the fourth republic with each handing over power to the other in an eight-year electoral cycle.

However, the NPP has promised to work hard to win the 2024 general election after eight years in power so as to break the jinx.

Vice President Bawumia, who has declared his intention to run for president, indicated that resourcing and strengthening the party’s internal structures will cushion the NPP to realise its aim of retaining power in 2024.

Speaking on behalf Dr Bawumia, the Senior Advisor to the Vice President, Mr Fred Oware, disclosed that the second gentleman of the land has allocated over GH¢700,000 to support to party organisation at all levels.

“I assure the party leadership right from the national to the polling station that he (Bawumia) is very well pleased with the way and manner this party has been managed for the past four years.

“And that he (Vice President) will continue to do everything within his means to support the party structures and events being organised to ensure that this party is strengthened and make ready for the 2024 break the eight battle no matter who becomes the flagbearer of the party. For that reason, he is asked me to make a donation of GH¢20,000 to the region and GH¢2,000.”

Mr Oware explained that the Vice President is doing this with the firm belief that “once the party is properly oiled with good leadership, we will continue to be able to keep the peace we have within the party and give us strength for the next election.”

The senior advisor to the Vice President pointed out at the Upper West Regional Delegates Conference that, “The over GH¢700,000 financial commitment is to support each region with GH¢20,000 and each constituency with GH¢2,000”.

Mr Oware Added that although the Vice President has declared his intention to run for President, he will only embark on a massive campaign when the time is due.

More than five persons have so far declared their intention to run for the flagbearership position of the governing NPP ahead of the presidential primaries somewhere 2023.

They include Vice President Bawumia, Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen, MP for Esikadu/Ketan Joe Ghartey, Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Owusu Afriyie-Akoto, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and former Minister for Trade and Industry under the Kufuor administration Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku.
