Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 general election, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed his sympathies to traders affected by the devastating fire outbreak in Adum in Kumasi, the Central Business District of the Ashanti Region with some donation to victims of the inferno.
The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025 destroyed numerous shops and properties running into millions of cedis, leaving many traders in distress.
Visiting the scene yesterday, Dr Bawumia described the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and pledged his support to those affected.
He was accompanied by former government appointees and leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), all of whom joined him in offering comfort to the victims.
In a bid to assist the traders to rebuild their businesses, Dr Bawumia donated GH¢200,000 in financial support and 1,000 bags of cement.
He emphasised the urgency of providing relief measures and called on the authorities to work diligently to prevent similar incidents in future.
“This support is just a small way to help you get back on your feet. I will continue to stand with you in any way I can,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia assured the traders of his continued support as they endeavoured to rebuild their businesses.
“I understand the pain and losses you have suffered, and it is my sincere hope that the support provided will assist you in recovering from this tragic incident,” he added.
Appreciation to Bawumia
Many traders expressed their gratitude for the generous donation, noting that both the financial aid and the cement would be instrumental in helping them start afresh.
“We have lost everything, but this gesture gives us hope,” one affected shop owner commented.
As investigations continue to determine the cause of the fire, the community remains hopeful that long-term solutions will be implemented to safeguard their livelihoods from future disasters.
Bawumia lauds Ghana Fire Service
Meanwhile, Former Vice President Bawumia has paid tribute to the Ghana Fire Service for their exemplary work during the recent Kumasi market fire.
He observed the swift and effective response by the fire service even under trying circumstances.
Dr. Bawumia described their actions as a “yeoman’s job”, noting that their prompt intervention helped to contain the fire and prevented further loss of property.
His commendation highlighted the importance of a well-coordinated emergency response in such critical moments.
