Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that government has delivered on its promise to enhance the peace and security of the country.

He said Ghana’s recent ranking by the global peace index, among other things, points to massive investment by government in the security sector.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Shukura District Police Command on Friday, Dr. Bawumia reiterated government’s commitment to retooling security agencies to enable them discharge their duties effectively.

“This government has lived up to the expectations in boosting safety and security in the country. Ghana continues to enjoy a good reputation as a peaceful and safe country with an enviable international image as an oasis of peace. Recent data shows that we are the second most peaceful country in Africa and the most peaceful country in West Africa.

The new Shukura police station

“This is according to the most recent Global Peace Index. The peace and stability of our country could not be achieved and maintained without the significant efforts of the law enforcement agencies,” he acknowledged.

Vice President Bawumia indicated that the commissioning of the ultra-modern District Police Headquarters in Shukura, a suburb of Accra, will help reduce crime in the area and its environs.

The police station will serve the people of Shukura, New Russia, Zabrama Line, Mabrouk, Soko, Banana Inn, Lartebiokorshie, Town Council Line, Flamingo, Sabon Zongo, parts of Abossey Okai and Mateheko.

It has a Charge Office; female, male and juvenile cells; Offices for Station Officer, Crime office, a Conference room, Commander’s Office and Orderly room.

Vice President Bawumia underscored the invaluable place of security as an indispensable tool for sustainable growth and development of any community, hence Government’s ongoing efforts to provide the necessary logistics and equipment to the security agencies.

“Security, peace and stability are the cornerstones of sustainable development… Ghana has become one of the most conducive investment destinations in Africa,” he said.

On maintenance culture, the Vice President charged the police service to adopt a sustainable plan that will keep not only this police station but others as befitting and attractive as possible.

Dr. Bawumia applauded the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for elevating the status of the police station to a district command.

He reiterated that Ghana’s credentials in peace and safety cannot be achieved without the efforts of law enforcement agencies, hence the government’s commitment to ensuring that they are well-equipped.

According to Vice President Bawumia, the 320 Security Housing Unit at the Tesano Training School is in the offing.

He charged the Police Service to maintain and put the facility to good use and properly maintain the building.

The new facility was facilitated by Director Operations at the Presidency Mr. Lord Oblitey Commey.

Dr. Bawumia commended Mr. Lord Commey for contributing his widow’s mite to provide for the people of Shukura and environs.

Interior Minister Ambrose Dery said the government’s transformational agenda for the Police Service has been evident in the provision of the needed infrastructure to enhance their work.

IGP’s remarks

Inspector-General of Police, George Akufo Dampare in a remark said the facility will not only complement the efforts of the Police Service but help improve policing in the community and the nation as a whole.

He assured of increased police visibility across the country to keep the country safe from miscreants.

Chief of Shukura, Alhaji Hamidu Ibrahim Dantani, Same-pay Mantse and Acting President of the Ga Traditional Council, Nii Adotey Otintor and other dignitaries including religious leaders graced the occasion.
