Police in the Bono Region have arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with an alleged fake gold syndicate operating in the Berekum Municipality.
The suspect, identified as Christian Gyamfi, was arrested on August 17, 2026, following investigations into a suspected GH¢1.1 million fake gold transaction involving a gold aggregator.
According to the Police, the complainant, 29-year-old Christopher Awuni, reported that four men who presented themselves as gold dealers sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.
Awuni, a gold aggregator, later discovered that the gold was fake and reported the matter to the Police. The suspected counterfeit gold has since been retained by the Police as an exhibit.
Following intelligence-led investigations, Police located and arrested Gyamfi at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted his involvement in the transaction and told investigators that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.
A Police statement said Gyamfi also identified three alleged accomplices as Abraham, alias Frenchman, who is believed to be the leader of the group, Isaac Antwi, and Balthazar. The three suspects are currently at large.
Preliminary investigations have further revealed that the group may have been involved in another alleged fake gold scam earlier this year.
According to the Police, the syndicate allegedly defrauded another victim of GH¢1.4 million in a similar transaction at Drobo.
Gyamfi remains in Police custody and is assisting with investigations as authorities intensify efforts to apprehend the other suspects.
The Police have urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging in gold transactions and to conduct proper verification before making payments in order to avoid falling victim to fraud.
