‎The Member of Parliament for Savelugu constituency, Fatahiya Abdul Aziz has stated that the “Democracy under Attack” demonstration organized by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) was a call to protect the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
‎
‎According to her, the constitutional values enshrined in the Constitution must remain sacred in the Republic.
‎
‎She said the country’s largest opposition stands in defense of freedom of speech and expression, the rule of law and the Independence of the judiciary.
‎
‎The lawmaker in a Facebook post said: “Yesterday, we stood together in defence of our democracy, freedom of speech and expression, the rule of law, and the independence of our judiciary.”

‎
‎Hajia Fatahiya added, “The “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration was, above all, a call to protect the constitutional values that must remain sacred in our Republic”.
‎
‎The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday, August 6, 2026, staged a mammoth protest in the nation’s capital, Accra, dubbed “Democracy Under Attack” to register its displeasure over what it describes as threats to Ghana’s democratic governance and justice system.
‎
‎For several months before the protest, leading members of the party have complained about the continuous arrests of it’s members for expressing dissenting views about the John Mahama administration.
‎
‎The party have also accused the Government of weaponing bail conditions to punish it’s critics.
‎
‎They maintained that since President Mahama took over the country, State Institutions like the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) have held accused persons in custody due to exorbitant bail bonds.
‎
‎Meanwhile, the party’s General Secretary, Lawyer Justin Kodua Frimpong, Minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, among other senior members five-page petition to Supreme Court, Parliament and the Presidency.
