The Accra High Court has ordered the remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, into police custody after he allegedly failed to comply with a key bail condition requiring him to surrender his passport.
The decision was taken after the court found that the accused had not adhered to the terms attached to his earlier bail grant in the ongoing criminal proceedings. According to the court, the failure to submit his travel documents amounted to a breach of the conditions set at the time he was released from custody.
Abronye DC was notably absent from court when the ruling was delivered. His absence was recorded as the court reviewed his compliance with the bail requirements and assessed the next steps in the case.
He is currently standing trial on a charge of false publication, a case instituted by the State. The allegations relate to claims that he allegedly made or circulated information considered to be misleading or untrue, which the prosecution argues is punishable under Ghanaian law.
Background
On May 13, the Accra Circuit Court remanded Abronye DC to the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) custody.
Prosecutors allege that the accused falsely published a video online containing derogatory remarks about a Circuit Court judge — claiming the judge was “always presiding over political cases” and that her rulings were “wrong and full of grammatical errors.”
He allegedly went further, stating: “You are not a judge but rather a politician who has covered your hair with a sack claiming you are a judge” — remarks the prosecution says were intended to incite the public against the court and the judge.
The alleged outburst followed a social media comment by a pastor about the vice president, a matter currently before the courts.
Abronye DC faces one count of publication of false news and one count of offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace. An earlier bail application before the Circuit Court was refused.
