The Ministry of Roads and Highways has discredited assertions of a reintroduction of road tolls across the country.
This comes after the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta’s presentation of the midyear budget review where he had indicated the commencement of the collection of road tolls on some roads in Accra.
The sector ministry in a statement stressed that the statement by the finance minister was restricted to financing arrangements for the Accra-Tema Motorway and Extension project.
It further added clarified that the finance minister’s reference to tolls in the budget review was in respect of Public Private Partnership Road projects only.
Meanwhile, transport operators in Accra say they expect the government to ensure revenue leakages with the collection of the tolls are addressed as this has been the case in the past.
Charles Danso is the Chairman of the Committed Drivers Union and he stressed that we can’t pay money and watch it go waste.
“If indeed they want to bring tolls back then there has to be a form of collection that will compel every vehicle user to pay” He added.
