Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Ashanti Region have rescued a day-old baby boy who had been dumped in a public latrine at Ahansonyewodea, Obuasi East.
The officers at the Obuasi Fire Station received a distress call on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at 10:30 PM to the effect that a newborn had been dumped in a public latrine.
The crew, led by STNO II Appiah Kubi arrived at the scene promptly within minutes after receiving the call. The officers through the use of an extension ladder descended into the latrine and successfully rescued the baby by 11:31 PM who was miraculously alive.
The child was then rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital (A.G.A.) for medical attention.
A Facebook post on Monday, July 21 by the GNFS applauded the Obuasi Fire Crew for their “swift response, bravery, and unwavering commitment to saving lives, even the tiniest among us.”
This is not the first time fire officers have rescued an abandoned baby in a precarious state. The Service has in the past come to the aid of newborns who are left by their mothers.
The most recent rescue adds to the rising number of concerns about women abandoning babies in perilous circumstances.
It begs the question of why humanity must respect and value human life.
Security authorities must also intensify efforts to bring perpetrators of some of these heinous deeds to face the law.
