The Jema community in the Western North region is set to launch an Environmental Stewardship Day on September 26.
This initiative was made known by Rev Fr Joseph Kwame Blay, a respected researcher, priest, and community mobiliser during an interview on the Point of View on Channel One TV on Wednesday.
The farming community of Jema, located in Ghana’s Western Region, has emerged as a symbol of resistance against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, with residents steadfastly rejecting all attempts to exploit their land for mining purposes.
At the entrance to the town, a clear and firm message has been placed: “No prospecting/mining on Jema lands. Trespassers do so at their own risk.”
Rev Fr Blay told host Bernard Avle that the community had invited all stakeholders to come and see the community’s template for its fight against galamsey.
“We are going to launch I think it is the maiden one, the Environmental Stewardship Day at Jema on the 26th of this month.”
“So we are going to call all stakeholders. I think the regional minister is coming, MCE is coming, the sector minister we have invited him, Hon Samuel Abu Jinapor and all people to come and endorse Environmental Stewardship Day and see the template that we have prepared in Jema,” he stated.
