The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu has said the conduct of the 2021 population and housing census is all about nation building and therefore urges the general public to get involve and be counted.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) commenced the nationwide data collection exercise today.

The GSS has deployed a total number of 4, 476 enumerators and 5, 392 Field Staff in the northern region to work in 4, 236 enumeration areas with 916 Supervisors and 39 District Field Supervisors.

Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu said every Ghanaian must get involve and be counted to enable the statistical service acquire accurate data for the country’s development priorities.

He maintained the data when completed will guide the policy interventions and programs of the government to bring development to the people.

The Minister made these comments in an exclusive interview with THE CUSTODIAN after he was counted at his private residence in Tamale in the early hours of Monday, June 28, 2021, when the 2021 Population and Housing Census started.

He emphasized it is mandatory for the populace to support and cooperate with the GSS to diligently conduct the exercise.

“It is mandatory for everybody to be counted, there are punitive sanctions under the laws of Ghana for persons who refuse to be counted or cooperate with the statistical service; but we don’t wish to get to that extent because you can be punished when you’re disobedient and so everybody must realize the exercise is about Ghana.

It is apolitical, it has nothing to do with religion or chieftaincy but it is about the wellbeing of every Ghanaian and what we can do scale up growth and development in the country” he explained.
