The Government of Ghana has officially announced the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing his death as a great loss to the people of Dagbon and the nation as a whole.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, by the Presidency Communications Office, President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the government, conveyed his deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians mourning the revered traditional ruler.
The government said it received the news of the Yaa Naa’s passing with profound sadness and acknowledged his remarkable contribution to peace, unity, and development in the Dagbon Kingdom.
According to the statement, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II will be remembered as a distinguished traditional leader whose reign helped heal divisions and foster reconciliation after years of conflict in Dagbon. His leadership was credited with promoting lasting peace, stability, and progress within the kingdom.
The statement further noted that his commitment to the welfare of his people strengthened collaboration between traditional authorities and the Government of Ghana, creating an enabling environment for development across Dagbon and contributing to national progress.
Paying tribute to the late overlord, the government praised his wisdom, dedication, and exemplary leadership, describing his service to the nation as invaluable.
President Mahama expressed the hope that the Yaa Naa’s legacy of peace, unity, and selfless service would continue to inspire future generations of leaders.
