As part of moves to implement the political of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe has paid a working visit to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) dedicated site for the licencing of motorcycle business operations popularly known as Okada.

The site, which is expected to run a 24-hour service will kick start after few infrastructures are installed.

The Acting Chief Executive of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotei took the minister round the site and some strategic locations of the authority in Accra.

In the lead up to the 2024 general election, NDC candidate now President John Dramani Mahama promised to legalise the operations of Okada riders should he win the election.

The visit by the Transport Minister, Nikpe was to have a first-hand information about the operations of the DVLA and assess its readiness for the 24-hour operations beginning with the necessary processes to regularize the motor cycle business in Ghana.

After few interactions with some staff, the minister inspected the dedicated portion of land allocated for the motorcycle licencing and assured that work will begin soon to get it operationalized.

“So this is the dedicated site to be used for training, assessment and licensing of motorcycle operators for the Greater Accra region and it will be a 24-hour services so we shall also kick start the 24-hour economy from here at the DVLA”, he explained.

The move is to ensure that our road users are safe and the service delivery from the authority is of high quality to many Ghanaians who visit for various activities. We want them to try as much as possible to fast track their services and also take out the unauthorized or ‘goro boys’ from their operations because they are not giving a good image of the Authority”, he added.

Acting Chief Executive for the DVLA, Neequaye Kotei assured that the facility will be operating a non-stop 24 hour services to ensure that more people are served within a short period.
