The government has earmarked GH¢400 million to procure high-capacity buses as part of efforts to enhance public transportation and improve mobility nationwide.

Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said the funding will be used to bolster the fleets of state-owned transport operators, including Metro Mass Transit (MMT) and the State Transport Company (STC).

The initiative, he explained, forms part of the government’s strategy to expand efficient mass transit services, particularly along heavily patronised routes, while making public transport safer, more reliable, and affordable for commuters.

“Government is reallocating GH¢400 million for the acquisition of high-occupancy buses to strengthen the fleets of state-owned transport companies, including Metro Mass Transit andthe State Transport Company (STC)” he said.

Dr Ato Forson noted that increasing the number of high-capacity buses is expected to ease congestion at bus terminals, reduce long passenger queues during peak travel periods, and improve the reliability of services on both urban and intercity routes.

He further stated that expanding the fleet of public transport vehicles would provide commuters with a dependable alternative to private cars, helping to ease traffic congestion on major roads across the country.

“Government is committed to improving urban mobility and providing safe, reliable, and affordable public transport for Ghanaians,”he added.

The Finance Minister stressed that strengthening the country’s public transport infrastructure remains essential to building a modern and efficient transportation system capable of meeting the growing travel demands of Ghanaians.
