Late former President Jerry John Rawlings

Burial service for late former president Jerry John Rawlings will be held on Wednesday January 27, according to official information.

This was announced through a circular from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to all Diplomatic Missions, International Organisations and Honorary Consulates accredited to Ghana.

According to the circular dated January 8, 2021, the former President will be laid in state from Sunday, January 24 to Tuesday, January 26 at the Foyer of the Accra International Conference Centre from 9am to 5pm daily.

It said a mass will later be held on Tuesday, January 26, at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra from 9am to 11am.

The circular added that the burial service, scheduled for Wednesday, January 27, will take place at the Independence Square in Accra from 9am to 11am.

Former President Rawlings died on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after a short ailment.

His funeral was scheduled for December 23, 2020, by the State but this apparently upset the Anlo Traditional Council, which claimed it was not consulted before the date was set.

The Council said the arrangements made at the time were not in accordance with the customs and traditions of the Anlo people.

Consequently, the funeral rites of the late former president were subsequently postponed indefinitely.
