The Member of Parliament for Karaga Consituency, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has commiserated with students of the Karaga Senior High School who lost their personal belongings and learning materials to the fire outbreak that occurred in the school few days ago.
The lawmaker has also pledged to swiftly rehabilitate the Girls Dormitory that was gutted by the fire leaving hundreds of the students displaced.
THE CUSTODIAN has learnt the school authorities in collaboration with personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have commenced investigations to establish the cause of the inferno. However, no life was lost was a result of the incident.
THE CUSTODIAN further understands that the incident happened while the students went for their night studies.
Addressing the media after visiting scene to obtain firsthand information, Dr Amin Adam who double as the Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance assured that the needed support would be extended the school and individual students affected for teaching and learning to continue unabated.
“I want to assure all the students and management and staff of the school that we will respond and we will respond soon.”
Dr Adam further donated an amount of Ten thousand cedis to the school management to provide refreshment for the students whilst they continue the ongoing West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
He also promised to distribute about 1,700 pieces of mathematical sets as part efforts to equip the students to write the exams successfully.
The girls’ dormitory houses about 600 students and with the disaster rendering it inhabitable, the school is now faced with the challenge of coming up with a temporary facility to accommodate the students.
Headmaster of the school, Mr. Ismaila Abdul Nasir, said a 6-classroom block has been converted to accommodate the students temporarily and called an urgent intervention to address the issue. He noted any delay will affect effective teaching and learning when the students on vacation resume school.
In his response, Dr Adam promised to liaise with the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum for the intervention of the government to ensure that the necessary resources are allocated to rebuild and enhance the school’s facilities.
Meanwhile, some residents of the community have made a clarion call to the government to construct a fire service station in for the Karaga District.
They believe the devastation would have been minimal if there was presence of the Ghana National Fire Service in the area.
