King James Volunteers Foundation has launched its monthly clean-up exercise for 2022 by clearing choked drainage in some parts of Madina.

The foundation is a community youth led group which is interested in bringing people together to promote ‘Self leadership Agenda’ on sanitation in Greater Accra.

Speaking to the Chairman of the Foundation over the weekend, Mr. Charles Atta Adjei shared concerns about how people must take responsibility to clean their frontage and communities to keep Ghana clean.

Mr. Adjei stated that ‘We want to support the AMA’s agenda of cleaning the communities once a month. A lot of people are not are partaking in this. As we have started like this, within the next 5-10 years we can make Ghana clean’.

The Chairman added that ‘We can’t leave this for other people so, we are ensuring that everyone will be part of what we are doing and everyone can do something in a small way to support what we are doing to get the desired results’.

This Clean up exercise started in 2020, this is the first for 2022 and the Foundation is working to see to it that people do not wait for the government to clean-up their surroundings. It is something people must learn to do for themselves.

“We are driving the self-leadership Agenda and with this we do not wait for Zoomlion or the President to push you to clean your community. It is a pattern we want to break’ Mr. Adjei said.

The Chairman lamented on the unavailability of working materials and the cost of acquiring such materials and prayed that they can get support from individuals and governmental organisations in the future.

However, the goal of the Foundation is to spread into other communities in Accra and bring together more youths to help the Agenda of cleaning their communities once a month.

Mr. Adjei said ‘ This is a nationwide project, we want to start with Madina and be able to move into places like Teshie, Dansoman, Jamestown, and etc. The mobilisation of people is a bit of a challenge but as we have started we will continue with it’.

In conclusion, the Chairman of the Foundation complained about how many people dump rubbish into drainage. They intend to set up the Volunteers to be community guards to prevent such behaviour and report them to the appropriate authorities.
