The Minority Women’s Caucus in Parliament has strongly condemned the reported violent attack on former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, describing the incident as unacceptable and a threat to the safety and dignity of women.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Caucus said it had received with “profound shock and concern” reports that the former lawmaker was attacked during a family-related event in Kwabenya.
The Caucus stressed that violence against women can never be justified, regardless of the circumstances surrounding an incident.
“We unequivocally condemn every form of violence against women, irrespective of the circumstances under which it occurs. No woman should be subjected to intimidation, assault or the use of firearms in the course of exercising her lawful rights or participating in family or public affairs,” the statement said.
Expressing solidarity with the former MP, the Minority Women’s Caucus wished Sarah Adwoa Safo a full and speedy recovery from the injuries she reportedly sustained during the attack.
The group also commended the Ghana Police Service for its swift response and called for a thorough, professional and impartial investigation into the matter.
According to the Caucus, anyone found responsible for the attack must be made to face the full force of the law.
“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done,” the statement added.
The lawmakers described the incident as a stark reminder of the persistent need to protect women from all forms of violence, noting that acts of brutality and intimidation have no place in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of women, the Minority Women’s Caucus said it would continue to advocate for the safety, dignity and protection of every woman in Ghana.
The Caucus also appealed to all Ghanaians to reject violence and embrace the peaceful resolution of disputes.
