MTN Ghana has pledged relief items valued at GH¢2.5 million to support thousands of families displaced by the recent floods that ravaged parts of Accra and six other regions, as the humanitarian toll from the disaster continues to mount.
The telecommunications giant will provide the relief in partnership with the Multimedia Group and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to help restore hope and provide immediate assistance to victims whose homes and livelihoods were devastated by the floods.
The intervention comes after NADMO confirmed that 34 people lost their lives nationwide following the torrential rains and flooding on Monday, June 29.
Of the total fatalities, 12 deaths were recorded in Accra, while the remaining 22 fatalities occurred in other affected regions across the country.
89,736 displaced
The floods affected seven regions, displacing a total of 89,736 people, making it one of the country’s most devastating flood disasters in recent years.
The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of displaced persons, with 54,712 people forced from their homes.
The Central Region followed with 21,882 displaced persons, while the Volta Region recorded 8,534 displaced residents.
The Western Region accounted for 2,020 displaced people, the Ashanti Region recorded 1,461, while 937 people were rendered homeless in the Western North Region.
The Eastern Region recorded the lowest number of displaced persons, with 190 people affected in the Abuakwa South Municipality.
Essential relief supplies
As part of the emergency intervention, MTN Ghana will supply a wide range of essential relief items aimed at meeting the immediate needs of affected households.
The donation includes student mattresses, blankets, mosquito coils, mosquito repellents, and food items such as rice, cooking oil, tomato paste, canned mackerel, sugar, spaghetti and oats.
The company will also provide detergents and toiletries to help families maintain basic hygiene while staying in temporary shelters.
Distribution of the items will be coordinated by NADMO, which will work with partners to ensure that assistance reaches the hardest-hit communities.
Standing with affected communities
Commenting on the initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, expressed sympathy for families affected by the disaster and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting communities during difficult times.
“We are heartbroken by the devastation caused by the flooding. Many families have lost their homes, their belongings, and their sense of normal life,” he said.
He noted that the relief package reflects MTN Ghana’s commitment to supporting communities beyond providing telecommunications services.
“At MTN, we believe in standing with our communities, especially in difficult times. This support is our way of showing care, bringing some comfort, and reminding affected families that they are not alone as they begin the journey to rebuild,” Mr Blewett stated.
Supporting national recovery efforts
The recent heavy rains triggered severe flooding across several parts of Accra and other regions, leaving thousands homeless and creating urgent humanitarian needs, including shelter, food, clothing and healthcare.
MTN Ghana said its intervention is intended to complement government’s ongoing emergency response and recovery efforts.
Through its collaboration with the Multimedia Group and NADMO, the company said it hopes to ensure that relief reaches vulnerable families quickly and efficiently.
The donation forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader commitment to supporting communities during national emergencies and demonstrates the role of corporate institutions in disaster response.
As rehabilitation efforts continue across the affected regions, the company expressed optimism that the relief items would provide immediate comfort to victims while helping them begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.
