The National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, has stated its preparedness barely 24hours to the opening of the Bagre Dam in neighboring Burkina Faso between tomorrow Friday, 27 August, and 30, 2021.

SONABEL ENERGY, the local authorities at Burkina Faso in a communiqué notified its development partners in Ghana about the imminent spillage of the Bagre and Kompienga dams.

THE CUSTODIAN has learnt the water level as at August 24, 2021, was 234.09m as against the maximum spillage level of 235m.

This, the Burkinabe authorities said in their statement has been rising rapidly.

Director of the National Disaster Management Organization in the Northern Region, Alhaji Abdallah Hindu in an interview with THE CUSTODIAN advised the communities along the White and Black Volta Lakes to take precautions and relocate to safer areas on high grounds.

He hinted the arrival of officers from the headquarters to begin activities of ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ at Walewale in the East Mamprusi municipality in the North East Region.  

He said NADMO has also prepared its two engine boats in the northern region as part of preparations ahead of the spillage.

He indicated one of the boats would be situated at Walewale in the North East and the other in the Northern Region as part of activities of ‘Operation Thunderbolt’.

Nevertheless, he said for over a month now community volunteers of NADMO have been conducting public awareness creation and sensitization amidst the torrential downpour in various communities in the region.  

“In the last two year or so, the personnel also received training on how to swim and equipped with life jackets, so that we can save people from drowning. And we train our volunteers too and all these forms part of our preparations” he said.
