The Northeast Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), has impounded a total of one thousand, one hundred and ninety-five (1,195) boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride (120 mg), popularly known as ‘Red,’ in the regional capital, Nalerigu.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Robert Anabik Anmain, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, who confirmed this in a statement dated September 21, 2025, said the restricted drug was concealed in a truck that was travelling from Sankase in neighbouring Togo to Gbintri, a farming community in the East Mamprusi Municipality.
He said the police have also arrested six suspects in connection with the items.
“The suspects, identified as Alhassan Braimah, Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Iddrisu, and Moses Ayorik, were arrested on 18th September 2025 after two trucks with registration numbers GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14 were intercepted. The vehicles, which had been loaded from Sankase in the Republic of Togo, were en route to Gbintri.”
DSP Anmain noted that a search of the trucks uncovered the 1,195 boxes of the restricted drugs concealed among other goods in the truck with registration number GR 1712-16. He added that the exhibits have since been secured for evidential purposes.
According to the Police PRO, suspects during interrogation admitted that the consignment was destined for Moses Ayorik at Gbintri for onward delivery to another individual at Gushegu in the Northern Region.
Meanwhile, all six suspects are in police custody assisting investigations, while police efforts are underway to trace and arrest other individuals connected to the case.
Police in the Northern and Northeastern regions have been on high alert in recent months to clamp down on the proliferation of illegal drugs among the youth.
