Mr Alban S.K. Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament

It is emerging that the vile attacks on the credibility of Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and others by the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are sanctioned by selfish power brokers of the party.

Sammy Gyamfi, who has been inducted into the infamous hall of fame of “Babies with Sharp Teeth”, recently launched scathing attacks on Speaker Bagbin, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, and Minority Chief Whip Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka for apparently abandoning party politics and upholding national interest.

This was after some Members of the minority NDC in Parliament voted for a number of ministerial nominees of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo against the demand of the party’s kingpins.

Sammy Gyamfi in a Facebook post after the approval of the ministers-designate said “Comrades, the betrayal we have suffered in the hands of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, the leadership of our Parliamentary group, particularly Hon. Haruna Iddrisu and Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, and dozens of our own MPs, is what strengthens me to work hard for the great NDC to regain power.

“It’s about time we understood, that we don’t have any NDC Speaker of Parliament. No, we don’t! We have a Speaker who rode on the back of the NDC into Office to pursue his own parochial agenda and nothing more. You trust them, at your own peril”.

THE CUSTODIAN has gathered that Sammy Gyamfi only is only a conveyor belt of a leader of the NDC who sees the Speaker and others, particularly Haruna Iddrisu as a serious threat to his unfinished presidential ambition.

Some NDC insiders say they are not surprised that several days after the uncultured conduct of the communications officer, no senior party member including former President John Dramani Mahama, has called their ‘errant boy’ to order.

This, according to the insiders, is the reason Sammy Gyamfi still stands by the attacks on revered speaker Bagbin, amiable minority leader Haruna Iddrisu and indefatigable minority chief whip Muntaka on various NDC affiliated platforms like Power FM.

In fact, NDC council of elders chaired by the venerable Mahama Iddrisu is yet to issue a word on the rampaging communications officer.

Majority Leader Speaks

Meanwhile, Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has reacted to the unprincipled attacks on the Speaker of Parliament and the NDC leaders in the House.

Some political analysts have been calling on Parliament to summon Sammy Gyamfi before Privileges Committee of the Legislature for his contemptuous vituperations.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu who is also the MP for Suame constituency said, “Indeed, the Speaker is a member of the NDC but immediately he is voted for, he ceases to represent the NDC, and he needs to be accorded the necessary respect. And so, if he is being denigrated, we need to protect him and protect the institution of Parliament”.
